People are moving in the US Everyday
Why So Many People are Moving in the US
Moving seems to be a part of life for some people while others tend to stay in one place over the course of several decades. Understanding who moves and why helps to know the different social and economic conditions that people are subject to over the course of their lives.
How Many People are Moving?
Although exact numbers are not available, the best estimates come from the US Census Bureau that conducts a nationwide survey every ten years to count everyone in the country. However, the census bureau also uses annual statistics as well to keep track of certain population trends. By using their statistics and keeping track of the people who are moving, they have come up with estimates that closely approximate the number of people who have found new homes over the years.
According to the latest statistics from 2012, approximately 36.5 million people moved to another location either as families or as individuals. Also, 64.4% of the people who did move stayed within their own county, meaning that moves of longer distances are in the minority.
The 36.5 million who did move is a figure that is up from 2011, but these figures tend to go up and down depending on a number of factors.
Why are People Moving In the US?
There are a number of reasons why people move either across the county or across the country. While the figure itself represents less than 15% of the total population, the fact that so many people move each year does involve a combination of reasons based on age, gender and socioeconomic conditions.
18 – 34 Year Olds:
This particular group is the most likely to move with people in their 20’s being the highest concentration. The main reason for this group being the most likely to move is centered on moving out from the parent’s home and finding their own way in life. While there are other reasons, moving out of the home is the most predominant.
With events like the recent surge in high paying energy related jobs in Houston young people are also more likely to be moving in the US to find new employment opportunities such as the ones available here. In fact, couples with young children are the most likely to move long distances which means well outside the county in which they previously lived.
65 and Older:
People in this age range are the most likeliest to move either into retirement homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities or into homes in other states to spend their retirement years. In fact, those who are 85 or older often move into new residences in the same county which generally indicates a move into some type of assisted living facility.
At some point, almost all people will move at least once during their lives and often multiple times over the course of a long life. From economic conditions that have working age people moving to new locations to family issues that have people moving in with loved ones to take care of their needs, there are a wide variety of reasons why millions of people in the US move every year.
