The World's Largest Medical Complex — and Its Apartments

The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex on Earth — 60-plus institutions, 106,000 employees, and a daytime population that rivals a small city. The residential ring around it along Holcombe, Fannin, and Old Spanish Trail is almost entirely apartments and mid-rise condos built to house the people who keep those hospitals running. Residents are doctors, nurses, researchers, and students. They work odd hours, move frequently, and relocate on timelines dictated by residency start dates and fellowship rotations — not lease cycles.

Every Med Center move is a parking and timing puzzle. Daytime congestion from hospital staff and visitors chokes every street near MD Anderson, Methodist, and Texas Children's. Apartment buildings require elevator reservations, COI paperwork, and loading dock windows that don't bend. The moves themselves are smaller — mostly one- and two-bedrooms — but the July 1 residency rotation creates a concentrated surge that books crews out weeks in advance.
